Photo of the Week: Disappearing Act

This picture was taken a few years ago on a short trip to San Francisco.  By some mishap, I managed to leave my camera’s memory card at home.  So for the whole weekend, we had to make do with our cellphone camera. We decided to walk over to the Golden Gate bridge and take a few pictures, but as you can see, the whole bridge was covered in thick grey fog.  From this vantage point, it looks like the bridge is disappearing into thin air.

The Palau de la Música Catalana is a well-known classical concert venue in Barcelona, and long considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world.  From the facade to the stage, the design of the Palau is ornate and rich in organic motifs that symbolize Catalan culture.  

The music hall is illuminated by natural light that shines through the intricate stained glass ceiling pictured above.  This masterpiece of creativity and imagination was designed by Antoni Rigalt to represent the sun and the sky.

Neuschwanstein, one of the most famous castle in Europe was built for the famously reclusive Ludwig II as a retreat.  This castle, was where the misunderstood Swan King withdrew into a fantasy world of his own creation. The romantic architecture combined with the idyllic surroundings evokes images of fairy tales, so it’s no surprise that it was the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle.  This picture was taken from the nearby Marienbrücke where you can get the full view of the castle set against the clear lake.

IMG_0641La Fortuna, Costa Rica

This picture of a hummingbird in flight was taken in the small village of La Fortuna in Costa Rica. This volcanic region is known for its tropical rainforest, beautiful waterfalls, and natural hot springs.  There is tons of wildlife in this fertile area, and walking around town you can see the humming birds buzzing around, feeding on the flowers.

Pergamum (168)Pergamum, Turkey

Walking up the winding road we came upon the ruins of Pergamum, an ancient city that once rivaled that of Alexandria and Ephesus.  Perched atop a windswept mountain is the Theater of Pergamum, one of the steepest theaters in the world. We sat on the well-worn steps among the remnants of the forgotten city and were transported back to another time.

IMG_3039Chiang Mai, Thailand

A visit to the ancient city of Chiang Mai is not complete without a stop to one of its 300 temples. The wats come in all different shapes and sizes, some are conspicuous with their glittering gold statues while others are crumbling and receded back into history.  Each one is filled with wafting incense smoke as people came to make their offerings and pay their respects to Buddha. 

This gold bowl with beautiful mums, reminiscent of the orange robes worn by the monks caught my attention.  I love the pop of colors against the whitewashed walls.

Home sweet home.  I never get tired of looking at the New York skyline no matter how many times I see it, from all the different angles and vantage points. This particular picture was taken from the Brooklyn Heights promenade with the idyllic view of the Brooklyn bridge spanning the East river to lower Manhattan on the other side.  This park is a great place to get away from the bustling city and hosts many activities from yoga sessions to free movie nights. It is also a great place to take your date on a romantic stroll.

On our way to Essaouira, a coastal city in western Morocco, we saw these tree grazing goats.  They were sitting in the thorny argan tree chilling out, so we had to stop on the side of the road to take a few pictures.

This week, we happened to be in Atlanta for a work conference and decided to visit the famous Georgia Aquarium.  It is one of the largest aquariums in the world, with a 6.3 MILLION gallon tank, housing whale sharks and manta rays amongst hundreds of other species of fish.  If you are so inclined, you can even go scuba diving in the tank and get really close and personal with the sharks. The general admission of $40 per person was a bit steep, but the experience was well worth the price.

IMG_6508Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

Koh Phi Phi island was made famous in the movie and the book, “The Beach.” The story talks of a pristine island in the Gulf of Thailand, uninhabited and forbidden; on which there lies a beautiful hidden beach and lagoon – walled in by cliffs and untouched by the tourist industry. As we landed on the island, we were disappointed to see that the once pristine beach is over-run by tourists and the clear water glistens with oil slicks from the motor boats that truck people in and out every day.
