Photo of the Week: Nightscape

IMG_6452Hong Kong, China

One of my favorite views of Hong Kong is from the top of Victoria Peak. The Peak, as it’s known locally, is the most popular tourist attraction in the city. From this vantage point, you can see the glittering panoramic view of the harbor, lit up by the surrounding skyscrapers. To get to the top you can either take the Peak Tram or a bus. The tram is more fun and a shorter direct trip to the top, but due to the high demand the wait to get on can take hours.  The bus is cheaper with less waiting, but the ride up the mountain can take about an hour.  Either option is not too appealing, but if it’s your first time in the city, this view is not to be missed.

We were in Hong Kong as protests broke out across the city.  It started in Central and grew in size, overtaking some of the major areas of the city. The people of Hong Kong were protesting the Chinese government for the right to elect their own chief executive in 2017.   The movement gained momentum and support over social media as it got prominent coverage in the world press.

View of Hong Kong harbor from Victoria peak

Hong Kong is a world class city.  Getting to and around Hong Kong is easy and effortless – from the customs and immigration process to figuring out public transportation.  We got off our flight and were at our hotel within an hour.  We took the airport express, which takes about 24 minutes from the airport to Kowloon station, and costs about 70 HKD (~$10USD).

When we were there, it was September and the weather was still unbearably hot.  Every time we walked outside, we would turn into a puddle of sweat within a few minutes.  It made walking around difficult, but we persevered. In no particular order, here are some of our favorite touristy places to visit in Hong Kong, most of which are free to do:

Eating in Hong Kong

This post was a long time coming.  It’s hard to believe that we were in Hong Kong three months ago!  Yes, that means I am very very behind on my posts.  Anyways, now that winter is here, it’s the best time to catch up.  Here is a short recap of our trip:  We found a cheap ticket to Hong Kong and decided last minute that we wanted to spend our anniversary in Asia, so off we went.  We were there for 4 days, but we managed to fit in quite a bit of food, but now that I think of it, that’s the norm when we travel.  This post will be the highlights of all the food we ate while in Hong Kong. Photo of the Week: Afternoon Glow

IMG_2200Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong is on our minds the past few days as we try to decide if we want to take advantage of a recent airfare sale.  Hong Kong is the bustling epicenter of Asia with a similar feel to New York, except more intense.  Here, people move faster, the streets are more crowded, and there is a Chanel on every corner.

I was going through my old photos and saw this one taken from the top of Victoria Peak, one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. We took the tram up the top in the late afternoon where we saw this beautiful view of Victoria Harbour as the sun started to set, creating a soft glow over the city. On the right, you see the the International Finance Centre, the tall building featured in the Dark Knight movie. The tall building on the left is the International Commerce Centre, the tallest building in Hong Kong.

Overlooking Victoria harbor from Avenue of Stars in Hong Kong

It’s that time of year again when people are looking to do their mileage run to build up their status for the following year. We did this last year by flying to Japan and South Korea on the Thanksgiving weekend. When you are doing something like this, you want to look for long flights, preferably to Asia or Africa with low airfares. Basically getting the most miles for your money. Continue reading
