IMG_7983Governor’s Island, USA

Do you have an oasis that you like to visit, to get away from the hustle bustle of the city?  For me, that place is Governor’s Island.  It’s located a short (5 minute) ferry ride away from the southern tip of the city.  In recent years, the island has had a major facelift transforming the abandoned coast guard base into a green oasis. 

The laid-back atmosphere on the island is contagious.  Here you will find people riding their bikes instead of cars, having picnics on one of the many green lawns, or taking an afternoon nap at the hammock grove. 

Even though it feels like worlds away, the looming city skyline in the distance reminds you that you are only a hop and a skip away from the chaos on the other side.  And the best part is that it only costs a $2 dollar ferry ride to get away from it all.

New York City From Above

One of my favorite ways to see a city is from above.  The different perspective can totally change how you see the place. Take New York for example – the chaos that you  feel when you’re on the street falls away once you’re in the air.  That was one of the reasons why I’ve always wanted to take a helicopter tour.  It took nine years, but I finally got to check this item off of my bucket list. It’s Memorial Day weekend, and somehow we found ourselves without any travel plans.  This is pretty rare since as you know, we usually plan our travel to coincide with national holidays to maximize our work vacation days.  Seeing as how we are in the city on this gorgeous weekend, we decided to do some of the things we don’t normally do – like go boating in Central Park, and visit the Brooklyn museum.  Sometimes it’s nice to play tourist in your own city.

It’s been raining here a lot lately, so when there is a sunny afternoon, I try to spend it outdoors. I’ve got to bask in that warm sun whenever I can, right?  My favorite hangout in our neighborhood is undoubtedly Riverside Park. Here you’ll find lots of people running, bike riding, or just relaxing on the park benches.  I usually grab a book, my headphones, and enjoy a few hours in the park.

I love walking, that’s probably the biggest reason why I love living in New York.  If you have the time, you can walk from the top to the bottom of Manhattan and explore the different neighborhoods that are constantly changing.  This past weekend, we decided to take a walk across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge on a lovely sunny day.  From the bridge you can see the Manhattan skyline across the East River.  You can also see the Empire State Building as well as the Chrysler Building in this photo.

It was a nice afternoon, so we decided to go for a walk to the Bethesda Fountain, our favorite place in Central Park.  The sun was filtering into the subterranean arcade lighting up the distinctive ornate interior.  The details of the magnificent Minton Tile ceiling have attracted many visitors to this spot over the years.  The  interior, filled with 15,000 colorful tiles, also has brilliant acoustics.  The place is always filled with beautiful music since there is never a shortage of performers.

I finally made it down to the new World Trade Center Path station.  Earlier this year the downtown transportation hub finally opened to the public after years of construction and delays.  The highly anticipated structure was designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, to resemble a a bird-in-flight.  The stunning $4 Billion dollar building opened to mix reviews.  The large open area in the center is known as the Oculus, and connects the train station, the September 11th Memorial plaza, and the many high-end retail shops.  Inside the main hall, the sun pours through the steel and glass design giving the feel of an open space.  Have you been inside the new World Trade Center Path station?  Do you think it was worth the hefty price tag?

What  a difference a week makes!  Last week I was still wearing shorts and tank tops, walking around the city, complaining about the heat.  This week, a cold front officially moved in heralding the arrival of Fall.  Although it’s hard to tell by looking at the green leaves on the trees, I guess they didn’t get the memo.  I have mixed feelings when it comes to Fall.  It’s true that the heat has dissipated and it’s finally bearable to walk around the city again.  The park is gorgeous this time of year in varying shades of red, orange, and yellow.   The part that I don’t like so much is the progressively shorter days and the eminent threat of freezing weather around the corner.  Here’s to hoping that Fall lasts a little longer this year.

Photo of the Week: Top of the Rock

My sister came to visit this past week, which gave me the perfect excuse to play tourist in my own city.  One of the places that I’ve always wanted to go to, but never been is Top of the Rock.  From the observation deck, you can see all the way downtown with the Empire State Building front and center.  The pricey ticket of $32 per person will get you access to the top floors, or you can skip all of that and just go to Bar 65 for a drink.  The restaurant is only 2 stories down, with essentially the same view and no admission cost.  You can use the money you would have paid and get yourself a nice cocktail instead.  Sipping a spatini while you admire the New York skyline at sunset is probably not a bad thing to do.

Visiting the Cloisters, nestled inside Fort Tryon Park, feels like you’ve been transported to another time and place – back to Medieval Europe, even though you’re just short train ride from midtown.  This offshoot of the MET is located at the northern tip of Manhattan with perfect views of the George Washington bridge and the Hudson river. The atypical museum space showcases stained glass, tapestries, and architecture from the Middle Ages.  The enchanting garden are the perfect place to end a tour of the castle.
