Photo of the Week: Eiffel Tower

IMG_4299Paris, France

This photo, taken from the top of the Arc de Triomphe while looking down the tree-lined Avenue d’Léna with the Eiffel Tower in the distance perfectly epitomizes the city of Paris for me. The location of the monument at the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle, makes it the perfect lookout to admire this beautiful city.  From here you can see all the way down the Champs-Élysées as well as many other notable landmarks around the city.  The Arc de Triomphe was erected to honor all the soldiers who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

Photo of the Week: Green Space

IMG_3736Paris, France

This photo was taken at the top of the Eiffel Tower, looking down onto the Champ de Mars.  This public green space is always filled with people playing, relaxing, or picnicking right under the shadow of France’s most iconic landmark.  It’s also a great place to enjoy the dazzling light show at night.  Instead of spending the 4 hours in line waiting to go up the Eiffel Tower, the time is better spent on the green lawn with a bottle of wine, a nice spread of cheese, and a baguette – you know, sightseeing Parisian style.

Photo of the Week: Illuminated

IMG_3838Paris, France

This photo was taken at the Eiffel Tower, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Paris, perhaps in the world. While we were there, we decided that it was a good idea to go up to the top of the tower.  Even though the line was long, we were not deterred, that is, until a few hours in.  Four hours later, we FINALLY made it to the observation deck.  The view was amazing, but I am not sure it was worth the wait.

The line down was almost just as long and we didn’t make it down until midnight.  At this point we were starving because we hadn’t had dinner, so we decided to spread out a scarf and have a picnic on the grass right at the base of the Eiffel Tower.  A guy came by and try to sell us a 5 Euro bottle of champagne.  Again, for some reason we thought this was a good idea.  It was not.

It was a long night full of bad decisions, but it was memorable.  We will never forget the night we had dinner under the Eiffel tower with a cheap bottle of champagne.

Honesty Rates

If you are going to Paris this summer, there might be a way for you to score a reasonably priced hotel room.  I just read an article on CNN about a program called payez ce que vous voulez  or pay what you will  that’s being  promoted at several hotels in Paris from July 21 to August 10.  This is the first time I’ve heard of the notion of “honesty rates”.  It’s a novel idea, letting the guests decide on the fair rate they would like pay for a night stay in the hotel.  I know from past experience that hotels in Paris can be very expensive, so the opportunity to decide on what you want to pay in the peak summer season seems too good to be true.
