Photo of the Week: Band

IMG_5934New Orleans, USA

One of the things I love about New Orleans is the live music. At the birthplace of jazz music, you can find it on the street corner, in a club and every where in between.  While walking around Jackson Square , we ran into a full band ensemble playing a rousing rendition of ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ .  The exuberant music creates a lively atmosphere.  It’s not unusual to see people dancing down the busy street.

Photo of the Week: Cloister

Visiting the Cloisters, nestled inside Fort Tryon Park, feels like you’ve been transported to another time and place – back to Medieval Europe, even though you’re just short train ride from midtown.  This offshoot of the MET is located at the northern tip of Manhattan with perfect views of the George Washington bridge and the Hudson river. The atypical museum space showcases stained glass, tapestries, and architecture from the Middle Ages.  The enchanting garden are the perfect place to end a tour of the castle.

Photo of the Week: Centered

IMG_1433 (1800x1200)Kauai, Hawaii

When we were planning our trip to Kauai, a friend told us about a secluded beach that is one of the local’s best kept secrets – located on the north shore of the island, down a long dirt road.  Getting to the beach is a bit challenging as you have to climb over a steep wooded area filled with gnarly tree branches that is guarded by mosquitoes.  But the effort was definitely worth it.  Once you cleared the trees, you are greeted by an empty beach filled with golden sand.  The waves were too rough to consider wading in the water, at least for a weak swimmer like me.  It was enough to sit on the jagged rocks and listen to the waves crashing into the shore.

Photo of the Week: Lines

The ultra modern Pritzker Pavilion serves as the centerpiece for Millennium Park and home to the Grant Park Music Festival, as well as many other outdoor music performances throughout the year.  Frank Gehry’s creative design of interlocking steel trellis spanning the great lawn gives a futuristic feel to the space, and the tall buildings provide the perfect backdrop to this beautiful setting.

Photo of the Week: Taft Point

IMG_1807Yosemite National Park, USA

Taft point is one of the lookout points at Yosemite National Park with an uninterrupted view of the valley below.  If you are brave, you can walk all the way to the edge and look over the precipice.  That little dot in the middle, sitting on the overhang is Fausto. Did I mention that there are no railings? Since this place is less crowded than Glacier point, we found a quiet place to sit and admire the breathtaking vista.

Photo of the Week: Railroad

IMG_4490New York City, USA

This photo was taken at the train station on 125th street in Harlem.  A lot of commuter trains from Connecticut pass through this hub on their way into the city.  The lines of the railroad tracks are very beautiful to me.  I love sitting here watching the trains zoom off until they are a tiny dot in the distance.

Photo of the Week: Disappearing Act

IMG_20130908_123840227_HDRSan Francisco, USA

This picture was taken a few years ago on a short trip to San Francisco.  By some mishap, I managed to leave my camera’s memory card at home.  So for the whole weekend, we had to make do with our cellphone camera. We decided to walk over to the Golden Gate bridge and take a few pictures, but as you can see, the whole bridge was covered in thick grey fog.  From this vantage point, it looks like the bridge is disappearing into thin air.

Atlanta: Aquarium

IMG_7734

Atlanta might be land locked, but in the center of the city is one of the largest aquariums in the world; housing more than 10 million gallons of water, and home to tens of thousands of fish and other sea creatures representing several hundred species.  This was where we spent a hot Saturday afternoon exploring the aquatic life. The ticket price of $38.95 per person is steep, but it includes access to a dolphin show, 4D movie, and many other exhibitions. Continue reading
