Photo of the Week: Hot Springs

IMG_6199La Fortuna, Costa Rica

This picture was taken at the Tabacón  hot springs – located at the northern base of Arenal Volcano. The geothermal springs are heated naturally by the magma found in the earth’s core. The mineral-rich natural springs are surrounded by lush tropical foliage and serene cascading waterfalls creating a paradise setting, perfect for relaxation after a long day of trekking through the rainforest.

Photo of the Week: Lines

The ultra modern Pritzker Pavilion serves as the centerpiece for Millennium Park and home to the Grant Park Music Festival, as well as many other outdoor music performances throughout the year.  Frank Gehry’s creative design of interlocking steel trellis spanning the great lawn gives a futuristic feel to the space, and the tall buildings provide the perfect backdrop to this beautiful setting.

Photo of the Week: Bosphorus Strait

Istanbul (986)Istanbul, Turkey

The city of Istanbul straddles two continents, Europe and Asia.  With its strategic location on the Bosphorus peninsula between the Mediterranean and the Black Seas, it has attracted many conquering armies over the centuries.  It has also had lead to a mix of East and West culture that has made the city one of the most unique in the world. This picture was taken from the Bosphorus Strait where the ancient Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque stand out prominently in the city skyline.

Photo of the Week: Green Space

IMG_3736Paris, France

This photo was taken at the top of the Eiffel Tower, looking down onto the Champ de Mars.  This public green space is always filled with people playing, relaxing, or picnicking right under the shadow of France’s most iconic landmark.  It’s also a great place to enjoy the dazzling light show at night.  Instead of spending the 4 hours in line waiting to go up the Eiffel Tower, the time is better spent on the green lawn with a bottle of wine, a nice spread of cheese, and a baguette – you know, sightseeing Parisian style.

Photo of the Week: Prayer

IMG_5642Sukhothai, Thailand

Sukhothai was the capital on the once mighty Kingdom of Siam, which flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries. This prosperous period is considered the golden age of Thai civilization.  Today, all that remains of the kingdom is the 45 sq km historical park that contains the ruins of ancient sites.

Photo of the Week: Japanese Garden

IMG_4432 New York City, USA

This weekend is Sakura Matsuri, the 35th annual cherry blossom festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  It’s the peak time to see all the beautiful spring flowers in bloom. This picture was taken on a stroll of the Japanese garden, a little piece of calmness in the center of chaos.  It was a beautiful Saturday and thousands of people made the trip to Prospect Park not just to enjoy the flowers but to take in the colorful cosplay and and performances at the festival.

Photo of the Week: Gibraltar

IMG_0763Gibraltar, Europe

Gibraltar is a small British Territory (just under three square miles), located at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula and easily accessible from both Spain and Morocco.  One of the main attractions here are the towering limestone ridges that rise to almost 1,400 feet, known as the Pillars of Hercules.  The low hanging cloud creates a mystical effect in the picture taken on our hike up the Rock of Gibraltar.

Photo of the Week: Taft Point

IMG_1807Yosemite National Park, USA

Taft point is one of the lookout points at Yosemite National Park with an uninterrupted view of the valley below.  If you are brave, you can walk all the way to the edge and look over the precipice.  That little dot in the middle, sitting on the overhang is Fausto. Did I mention that there are no railings? Since this place is less crowded than Glacier point, we found a quiet place to sit and admire the breathtaking vista.

Photo of the Week: Machu Picchu

IMG_3919Machu Picchu, Peru

Sometimes the journey teaches us about the destination, and in this case, it couldn’t be more true.  Walking the same path that was used by the ancient Inca in their pilgrimage to the top of Machu Picchu was surreal.  I learned to pause along the way and admire the quiet beauty of nature.  The days it took to reach Machu Picchu  were hard, pushed me to my limits, and made me appreciate this magnificent sight that much more.  On the fourth day, we woke up early to make it to the Sun Gate in time for sunrise.  Looking down at this sacred city with the sun light breaking through the clouds is an image I’ll never forget.

Photo of the Week: Concrete Forest

IMG_9355Barcelona, Spain

La Sagrada Familia is the crown jewel of Barcelona and one of Gaudi’s most famous works; yet it’s been under construction on and off since 1882 and still not complete.  The towering pillars rising up to the vaulted ceiling reflect the colorful lights from the stained glass windows and reminds me of the mottled effect of sunlight pouring through thick branches. Gaudi is well known for his organic style of architecture, drawing inspiration from nature, so it’s not far-fetched to enter the cathedral and imagine yourself walking amongst a concrete forest. This is one of my all time favorite cathedrals.
