Photo of the Week: The Beach

IMG_6508Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

Koh Phi Phi island was made famous in the movie and the book, “The Beach.” The story talks of a pristine island in the Gulf of Thailand, uninhabited and forbidden; on which there lies a beautiful hidden beach and lagoon – walled in by cliffs and untouched by the tourist industry. As we landed on the island, we were disappointed to see that the once pristine beach is over-run by tourists and the clear water glistens with oil slicks from the motor boats that truck people in and out every day.

Cairns: Port Douglas

In Australia, the more north you go, the hotter and more humid it gets.  Getting off the plane in Carins, we were immediately hit by a wave of thick hot air that just stuck to your skin and soaked your shirt. Our destination was a sleepy beach town near Cairns with a local population of less than 5,000 people.  Port Douglas has long been considered one the best towns in Australia, with it’s proximity to the Daintree rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.  When we were there in December, it was during the off-season and the town was empty, so it was a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate.

Whitsundays: Whitehaven Beach

Close your eyes and imagine a tropical paradise. With fine white sand and clear blue water as far as the eye can see, Whitehaven is probably as close to paradise as you can get. I’ve been to my share of beautiful beaches, but nothing holds a candle to Whitehaven.  It’s no wonder that it’s considered one of the world’s most unspoiled and beautiful beaches.  The area is uninhabited and can only be accessed by boat or helicopter from the surrounding islands.

Whitsundays: Hamilton Island

After five days in the city, we were ready to fly to beautiful Queensland.  We decided to stay on Hamilton Island, one of the 74  tropical islands at the heart of the Whitsundays.  The island is situated between the Queensland coast and the Great Barrier Reef, making it the perfect base for exploring the surrounding areas. Even though it’s the largest of the inhabited Whitsundsay islands, it’s less than 2 square miles in area.

Sydney: Bondi Beach

Sydney is a seaside city with many world famous beaches located right around the metropolitan area.  Bondi Beach (pronounced: bond-eye) is one of the busiest and most popular beaches in the city, only about 30 minutes from the city center.  It is well known for it’s soft white sand as well as prime surfing location. The beach is only 1 km long and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world.

On the Road: Day 4 in Bondi

Today we headed out of the city to Bondi, famous for it’s crystal blue water and white sand beach. We spent the morning soaking up the sun and jumping waves.  Bondi is also the perfect place to people watch. The beach is filled with surfers, sunbathers, and people frolicking in the water taking advantage of the beautiful Australian weather.

IMG_6625Koh Khai, Thailand

It’s really hot here in New York, which makes me wish I was at the beach.  So today’s picture of the week will hopefully transport me and you to the beautiful Koh Khai island, Thailand.  This tiny piece of paradise is where the blue sky meets the soft sand and crystal clear water.  In fact, the water was so transparent, you can see the school of fish mingling with people that wade in the water.  On the beach, colorful umbrellas and chairs were set up for tourists to visit for the day.
