If you want to truly experience a place, you need to ask the locals for their best kept secrets. In Powell River that secret is an abandoned quarry on the small nearby island of Texada. In the days of Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram, it’s hard to truly keep any place a ‘hidden gem’ for long, but that’s exactly what we set out to find.
For Canada’s 150th birthday, my family made our way West to British Columbia for our yearly get together. It’s a tradition that we started after we all grew up and moved apart. This year we choose to spend an idyllic week at a small town on the upper Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. When my sister first suggested we travel to a small town 5 hours from Vancouver, I balked at the idea. It just seemed like too much running around and not much time to relax. But most of the journey was by ferry, and we got to see the beautiful British Columbia landscape from the water – prominently featuring rolling hills and snow capped mountains. After getting off of a red-eye with only four hours of sleep, we decided to head to Squamish to attempt an EPIC 18 km hike to Garibaldi Lake. Were we crazy? Probably. But how can you not hike when you’re in British Columbia, where hiking is practically a required past time. Continue reading

Last week signaled the end of summer, but I am not ready to let it go just yet. Before I officially say good bye to warm summer nights, walks by the beach, and of course smelly subway stations, I wanted to share this photo of one of my fondest memories of this summer. Our family got together and rented a cottage by Lake Miskwabi where we spent a few blissful days eating, swimming, and exploring. Spending time with the people I love in such an idyllic setting is the epitome of the perfect summer. Now I am ready to welcome Fall with her brisk breezes and lovely colors.

Living in a city like New York with the lots of light pollution it’s impossible to see the stars at night. That’s why I appreciate the rare occurrences when I am out in the open and I can look up and see the sky full of stars. This photo was taken on our trip to a cottage, a few hours north of Toronto. Late at night after the parents went to bed, we stole down to the pier with our flashlights, blankets, and cameras. By the water, with the silence periodically broken by the sharp cry of a loon looking for its mate, the slow moving water gently swayed the dock as we quietly laid in a row. Looking up, the Milky Way was perfectly visible strewn across the inky black sky. Millions of stars twinkled, creating an unforgettable moment that I got to share with my family.

I am back in the city for a few days and already I miss Canada. I miss the fresh air, the tall graceful trees surrounding our cottage, and all the sounds of nature. The only thing I don’t miss are the armies of mosquitoes that viciously attack anyone that wanders outdoors. This picture was taken with my new wide angle lens that I got a few months back. During the late afternoon when the sun is low, the soft light streamed through the green leaves creating a glowing effect.

I’ve taken the last few weeks off from blogging to spend time with friends and family in Canada. We made the trip home last week to attend my sister’s wedding. It was a momentous event, 14 years in the making. After all the fun and madness, we were ready for some rest and relaxation by one of Canada’s many lakes. This picture perfectly captured the idyllic setting – blue sky, clear water and lots of peace and quiet. The days are mostly spent eating, canoeing, and fishing. Niagara, Canada
I remember the first time I visited the famous Niagara Falls and how I felt completely thunderstruck by the mighty force of water. Even from the parking lot, I could hear the roaring water crashing down. Over 600,000 gallons of water fall over the edge of Horseshoe Falls every second! This majestic waterfall is located at the border of Canada and the United States.
